SOURCE: Delia

DETAILS: There is a pastry shop on the corner of Manhattan and Java in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I went in and ordered a jelly/cream filled pastry, then went home, and tasted it for dessert. I don’t eat a lot of sweets, so I can’t say I finished it, but it was pretty tasty.

MISSION: Meet a stranger on the subway. Find out where they are going.

SOURCE: Annie

DETAILS: I hopped on the 1 train in midtown and rode it for a few stops. I began chatting with the girl next to me, who was almost falling asleep.

“Long day?” I asked.

“Yeah,” she answered.

“Heading home?”

“Yup,” she said, and I think she may have been a little creeped out, so I left her alone after that.

SOURCE: Anonymous

DETAILS: I wrote a letter to an old friend who I haven’t seen in some time. There was a bit of a falling out and I addressed this in a two page note. There was some resentment back then, but ultimately I hope they’re doing well now. Not sure what to do with this letter now though. It’s sitting in my “drafts” box.

SOURCE: Lisa

DETAILS: For me, I believe in a higher power, but I am unsure as to whether or not it exists in the way it is depicted by most major religions. I did a bit of research and found an amazing amount of articles and videos. Most boiled down to the science vs. God debate and I found very interesting points made by the Bible, Bishops, Einstein, Hawking and Sagen. My favorite quote, however is the following, which was found in Richard Dawkin’s book, The God Delusion: “There is a mean streak in anyone who will destroy another’s faith.”

MISSION: Learn about cinco de mayo.

SOURCE: Diego

DETAILS: So apparently Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day… that would be September 16th. The date is observed in the United States as Mexican heritage day, however in the state of Puebla, the day commemorates the Mexican victory over the French at the battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. I never knew.

I’m not really sure what I think happens after you die, but I like how he described his soul leaving his body. I’d call myself more spiritual than religious and that’s how I reacted to this interview. MISSION: Google Gregor MacGregor and read his story.
SOURCE: Angel
DETAILS: Gregor...

APRIL 26th

MISSION: Google Gregor MacGregor and read his story.

SOURCE: Angel

DETAILS: Gregor MacGregor was a Scottish sailor, soldier and colonizer who, in 1820 returned to London from a trip to Latin America announcing that he had been made the Cheif of Poyais (a small nation off the coast of Honduras). He described the royal family, buildings and opera house to investors who were all too eager to give MacGregor capital.

Three years later colonists boarded two ships and headed to Poyais to live in the great cities that MacGregor had described. The problem, however, is that Poyais didn’t exist. The only land MacGregor had any claim to was swamp land which was anything but inhabitable. Rescue ships were contacted, but due to disease (and even one suicide), only 50 of the 240 made it back.

This is a ridiculous scam topped off with the fact that Gregor had exchanged his settlers money for fake Poyais currency, which he had printed in Scotland. Interesting story though. The whole account can be found here: http://www.clangregor.org/Poyais/.

DETAILS: Markus (who is from Germany) was referring to the second leg of the Champions league final, where Real Madrid was hosting Bayern Munich. I was already pulling for Munich, as I’m not a huge Real fan and the game ended up going to penalty kicks. Bayern Munich won 3-1 in penalties and will face Chelsea in the Champions League Finals.
