MISSION: Initiate a snowball fight on the street.
SOURCE: Sasha G.
ANALYSIS: I was by the L train in Williamsburg when a snowball whizzed by my head. The guys behind me on the sidewalk were trying to hit a street sign, had missed and immediately apologized to me. Normally I may have been annoyed, but given this Mission, I smiled, grabbed some ammo and fired back. They laughed and...

MISSION: Go to www.idealist.org. Find a volunteer opportunity of interest in your area and sign up.
SOURCE: Emily O.
ANALYSIS: I found a volunteer opportunity at idealist.org for working with Cool Culture, an organization that serves low-income families that traditionally do not have access to cultural institutions. They need volunteers to work special events at museums.
Daily...

MISSION: Play a game of truth or dare.
SOURCE: Scott
ANALYSIS: Tim Wood (November 25th) and I went back to his house and played a game of truth or dare. Most truths were about girls we were into and most dares were to call them up pretty late. Ultimately we had a good time challenging each other and we had a few laughs.

MISSION: Create a letter to Santa listing a few things you want for Christmas.
SOURCE: Connie
ANALYSIS:
Dear Santa,
Hope all is well. If you get chance please deliver the following for Christmas: an ice scraper for my car, any Jamiroquai album to listen to on my road trips, some new jeans, new sneakers and maybe some ski gloves. I don’t need much though, so most of all a...

MISSION: Ask three people what their definition of love is and share your own.
SOURCE: Amy
ANALYSIS: Interestingly enough, two of the three people I asked scoffed and said, “I don’t have a definition - none at all.” The third, my friend Niki (October 22nd) answered, “I think the most important thing is to both always want to make the other person as happy...

MISSION: Every hour until midnight, pretend it’s New Years. Countdown and celebrate. Try to get others to join in.
SOURCE: Anonymous
ANALYSIS: I was at the bar with Matt B. (January 9th), Dan B. and Dylan A. Not too many other people were around, but we counted down, said, “Happy New Year,” and shared a few toasts. Good warm up for next week.

MISSION: For at least two hours, speak like Yoda.
SOURCE: Anonymous
ANALYSIS: I came home after soccer and had a few hilarious conversations before heading to work at the bar. I think the best part of this Mission was after a customer ordered a Pinot Noir, and I awkwardly told her, “For the wine, six dollars you owe.” She gave me a confused look and laughed a little...

MISSION: Create an Urban Dictionary reference for “Ouckama.”
SOURCE: Tom S.
ANALYSIS:
Ouckama - noun: A long series of good-byes, which begin in a house or building, but continue outside, until the departing party has actually driven away and is out of sight.
Example: We’d have gotten here sooner, but the Ouckama was especially long today.

MISSION: Memorize the Gettysburg Address.
SOURCE: Ariele
ANALYSIS: It took me a while, but I finally recited it for Whitney S. (March 22nd), and responded, “word for word.” It is as follows:
Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

MISSION: Have a conversation with a guy at a bodega/deli. Find out where they’re from and how big their family is.
SOURCE: Max
ANALYSIS: I spoke with a bodega owner on Manhattan Ave. in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. He is from Yemen and has a big family. They are spread out between America and a few other countries, but most of them are still in Yemen. He seemed like a nice guy.

MISSION: Make friends with a stranger. Find out his/her best and worst moments from 2010 and their resolutions for 2011. Share yours, then wrap it up with a toast to a happy and safe holiday season and New Year to come.
SOURCE: Elizabeth M-R.
ANALYSIS: I met Michael at T.B.D. The best moment of 2010 for him was when he lifted a 40 kg. kettle bell 17 times. His worst moment...

MISSION: Talk to someone who is not from New York City and find out what brought them here.
SOURCE: Riz
ANALYSIS: I asked Mary where she is from and she answered “Central Jersey.” When I asked what brought her to NYC she answered, “I don’t know.”
“Job?” I asked, but no response was given. “Dude?”
“Yeah, I guess...

MISSION: Get someone you don’t know to tell you a secret.
SOURCE: Cindy
ANALYSIS: I met a girl named Cecile at Lulu’s in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. We chatted for a while, but she was having a hard time coming up with any secret. Finally she revealed that her sister was pregnant, but that no one was supposed to know yet (it’s still early). This will be Cecile’s...

MISSION: For one day, greet everyone you pass in NYC with a smile, wave, “hi,” “hello,” etc.
SOURCE: Carrie L.
ANALYSIS: Funny that yesterday’s and today’s Missions were back to back. I found this one a bit challenging, as people rarely speak to each other on the street in NYC. I learned that smiles and waves have a far less chance of being...
